Your task:

Let’s make our school nicer

Ima­gi­ne the SMV wants to make our school nicer and has asked YOU for your help, be­cau­se you have learnt a lot about Bri­tish schools so far:

  • Think about what our school could take over from [Schu­le der Lehr­werks­kin­der] .
  • Make at least four sug­ges­ti­ons.
  • In a role play, pre­sent your sug­ges­ti­ons to the prin­ci­pal and vice-prin­ci­pal of our school and give re­a­sons.

What you have to do:

Work in pairs.

  • Work to­ge­ther with your part­ner and brain­storm ideas about what makes ... School spe­cial. Then make a mind map to­ge­ther. Use an A3 pos­ter.

Step 2: What would YOU like to take over at our school?

  • Look at your mind map and talk to your part­ner. Tell your part­ner po­li­te­ly what you like about ... School and what you don’t like so much. Give re­a­sons. Then lis­ten to your part­ner.
  • Now agree on at least four points you’d like to have at our school. Use the + sign on your mind map to show what you’d like to take over from ... School.

Step 3: Why would you like to take over these ideas?

  • Make a chart in your ex­er­cise book like this:

    po­si­ti­ve things
    re­a­sons
       

  • In the left co­lumn write down the po­si­ti­ve things about ... School you would like to have at our school (at least four points).
  • In the right co­lumn write down your re­a­sons. You don’t have to write sen­ten­ces. Use key­words.

Step 4: What could you tell our prin­ci­pal?

  • Use your notes in the chart to pre­pa­re a short speech. Each of you must pre­sent two ar­gu­ments. You may use index cards, but do not read out your text.
  • Now prac­tice gi­ving your talk.

Step 5: Get ready for the mee­ting with the prin­ci­pal!

a. Ima­gi­ne you enter the prin­ci­pal’s of­fice: What comes first? What comes next? To­ge­ther with your part­ner, put the steps in the cor­rect order:

a. thank the prin­ci­pal and vice-prin­ci­pal for ha­ving time for you
b. enter the room and close the door be­hind you
c. say hello in a po­li­te way
d. say good-bye
e. knock on the of­fice door
f. in­tro­du­ce your­sel­ves: give your names and your form
g. give the pur­po­se of your visit
h. leave the room and close the door be­hind you
i. ask whe­ther you can dis­turb the prin­ci­pal

Step 6: What ques­ti­ons could the prin­ci­pal and the vice-prin­ci­pal ask you?

a. What do you think the prin­ci­pal and vice-prin­ci­pal could ask you? Make a list of pos­si­ble ques­ti­ons in your ex­er­cise book.
b. How would you an­s­wer the ques­ti­ons? Brain­storm your an­s­wers. Write down some key­words in your ex­er­cise book. Plea­se re­mem­ber to be po­li­te .

Now two pairs form a group of four.
Step 7: Let’s meet the prin­ci­pal!

One pair takes the roles of the prin­ci­pal and the vice-prin­ci­pal. The other two are pu­pils.

Now role-play the visit to the prin­ci­pal’s and vice-prin­ci­pal’s of­fice. Prac­tice se­veral times and try to speak as fre­e­ly as you can.
