Mündliche Prüfung - slumdog

1. Voraussetzungen

In dieser sehr intensiv kommunikativ ausgerichteten Einheit ist eine mündliche Prüfung nicht unbedingt nötig, aber durchaus angebracht. Nachdem jeder Kursteilnehmer recherchiert, zusammengestellt und präsentiert hat und sich in einem authentischen Rahmen mit einer Vielzahl von „Tasks“ beschäftigen musste, soll er/sie nun beweisen, dass er die große Menge an Informationen durch die anderen Teams einordnen und verarbeiten kann. Die Kommunikationsprüfung Moderne Fremdsprachen ist nicht mehr fern und je mehr Prüfungspraxis geboten wird, desto größer die Erfolgschancen.

2. Anbindung an die Bildungsstandards

Hier sei nur exemplarisch aufgelistet, was an anderer Stelle ausführlich zu lesen ist:

• Beschäftigung mit einem anderen Teil der englischsprachigen Welt
• Verhältnisse in Deutschland mit anderen Ländern vergleichen
• eigene Lebenserfahrungen mit anderen Sprechern austauschen
• Die steigende Bedeutung Indiens als „new superpower“
  

3. Einbindung in die Behandlung der elf Kurzgeschichten „One language….“

• Die Schüler sind mit der Geschichte früherer Kolonien vertraut und können ihr Wissen und die angeeigneten „skills“ auf den Roman anwenden.
• Es werden Einblicke in einen unbekannten Kulturkreis gewährt und die literarische Gattung des Romans ermöglicht einen anderen „Approach“ als die „short stories“.
  

Aufbau:

1. Monologisches Sprechen- 10 Minuten pro Schüler - eventuell Lehrerimpulse
2. Discussion (Dialogisches Sprechen) -10 Minuten
3. Sprechen in der Triade - 10 Minuten
   

1. Monologisches Sprechen

Partner A: You are to speak for about 10 minutes. (Bildimpulse “slums and chawls”)

1. Describe the pictures.
   
2. State your opinion: Is India a Third World country or a superpower in the making?
3. Summarize the novel “Slumdog Millionaire” in a few sentences. Provide some examples from the novel to support your previous verdict.

Partner B: You are to speak for about 10 minutes. (Bildimpulse Modernes Indien, High Tech Indien)

1. Describe the pictures.
   
2. State your opinion: India and China are going to replace the USA as the leading economic superpower.
   
3. Recommend the novel “Slumdog Millionaire” to your best friend. His reaction: “Sounds like the myth of the dishwasher who becomes a millionaire”. Tell him to what extent this “American Myth” can be traced in the novel.
   

2. Discussion

India has finally rid itself of old colonial ties and is on its way to economic world domination.

Discuss the six suggestions/statements below with your partner and try to reach an agreement: what might the future have in store for the subcontinent?

1. Horrible diseases, a rather lacking infrastructure and prone to terrorist attacks -India is rotting away from inside.
   
2. India’s economy is booming and with a much higher birthrate than China, its workforce will be a force to reckon with.
   
3. India is at present a country where private entrepreneurs and foreign investment make the future look bright and shiny.
   
4. The many millions of poor and handicapped people in India will sooner or later come to the fore and demand their part of the boom.
   
5. Corruption and favouritism may prove to be India’s downfall.
   
6. Compared with China, India is still miles away from becoming a serious contender on the world market.
   

3. Sprechen in der Triade (S-S-L)- 10 Minuten

In your previous task you were supposed to reach a joint decision. Outline India’s future in a few sentences. One of you can start and the other one joins in when appropriate.

Tell the audience why you think that “Slumdog Millionaire” presents a valid picture of the modern Indian society.

Tell the audience why you think that the novel is only a fairy tale and only provides a twisted picture of the current situation.
